All Things Water Filtration

Learn About Healthy Water for Healthy People

This month, Collier Services is discussing all things water filtration. Removing impurities from drinking water is one of the best things a person can do for their overall health. Water is one of the most basic things our bodies need to function properly. In simple form, a water filter is a device that forces water through barriers to remove contaminates or impurities. Those barriers are called filters or more specifically, media. The most common types of filters are:

  • Acid Neutralizing
  • Granular Zeolite (Filter Z)
  • Carbon

Filters, Filters, Filters

Acid Neutralizing filters use calcite to raise the pH of the water before it enters your household plumbing. By raising the pH level of the water, less corrosion will occur on plumbing fixtures and pipes. Granular Zeolite filters contain aluminum and silicon compounds that work by removing ammonia/ammonium. These types of filters are also often used to purify the water in swimming pools.

Carbon filters remove sulfur and chlorine odors and tastes. Oftentimes if sulfur levels are very high, a pre-chlorination system may can help increase the life of a carbon unit. When paired together, filters work to remove impurities, bacteria, and other harmful substances. They do this to restore a safe to use and pleasant tasting water. How Long Do These Filters Last?

While water filters work great for a long time, eventually they are unable to continue to remove contaminants. On average, you should change filters every 6-8 months or a maximum of 1 year. If you don’t change your whole-house water filters, harmful bacteria and other germs and impurities can enter your plumbing system. As the media in the filters age, small holes and cracks form allowing untreated water to pass through. So remember to change the filters regularly.

Drink Water That’s Good Until The Last Drop

Water filtration can provide better tasting and smelling drinking water by removing chlorine, pesticides, heavy metals, and bacterial contaminants. When shopping for a water filtration system, think about how many people live in your home. It’s also important to know how much water they use on a daily basis. Certain types and sizes of water filtration systems can better handle more or less water usage.
