DIY Plumbing, When Not to Do It

“I can do it myself and save money.”

Are you familiar with DIY plumbing, and when not to do it? Our plumbers at Collier Services have some advice for DIY plumbers: don’t bite off more than you can chew. If you are trying to save money by making a repair yourself, that’s all well and good, sometimes.

Some plumbing repair and projects can seem easy, but you might run into some issues down the road. In this blog we’ll talk about when it’s ok to try DIY plumbing repair and when you should call us.

We Can Handle Small Plumbing Projects and Repairs

Almost anyone can fix a running toilet or a minor clog. If you were to call a plumber for these issues, you may end up spending more money. A running toilet is usually caused by a worn out flapper valve. Simply turn off the water, drain the tank and remove the old valve. Take a quick trip to your local hardware store and find the correct replacement. Any hardware store should be happy to help and give advice on what you can do to fix the problem.

Minor clogs in your shower or sink drain are usually caused by a buildup of hair or other debris. Pouring a pot of boiling water should do the trick and wash out the clog. If it still runs slowly, pour a ½ cup of baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar, and hot water in it. Try a drain snake next if you are still having trouble. When all else fails to remove the clog, it’s time to call us! For more tips about how to unclog a drain, see what the guys over at This Old House mention.

Our Team Offers Major Plumbing Repairs and Installations.

It’s best to leave it to the professional when it comes to making major plumbing repairs. They can also handle remodeling a bathroom, kitchen, or any other project requiring plumbing. Oftentimes when you are doing any kind of construction on your home, your project must follow certain building codes. If damage occurs, you may be responsible for the bill (not your homeowners insurance policy.)
